When a small village was plagued by a wild wolf, it is told that a humble friar named Francesco came and met the predator with nothing but his gentle presence, and turned the wolf from a menace into a welcome protector of the community. This graceful man, who spoke to each part of creation as a sister or brother, has become one of the most beloved of all saints.

Dante Alighieri on quest of Paradise. An Illustrated Talk in celebration of the 700-year anniversary of Dante’s death by Caroline Clarke.

The quest for Paradise is the quest for consciousness, writes Jungian analyst Helen Luke in her book Dark Wood to White Rose: Journey & Transformation in Dante’s Divine Comedy, but in order to discover the light we must first encounter the darkness. This dark night of the soul is where Dante’s Commedia famously begins. The journey that follows is universal. It will lead us to the very depths of hell, and then onward, if we survive, to the great Mountain of Purgatory, to a cleansing and purification of our souls in readiness for the great ascent to Paradise and to heaven’s bliss.

Experiential travel. An illustrated talk in English and Italian by Maura Mattana and Alessandro Picciau”.
In recent years, experiential tourism is emerging as one of the favourite formats for people to get to know a place.
So the era of touch and go travel ends, in which travel is fast and leaves no time to truly savour the atmosphere of the place.
Experiential tourism focuses on personal experience.
Tourists come into direct contact with local people, share experiences with their travel companions and take the time to get to know the beauties of the place.
It is a way of traveling that is often also referred to as conscious tourism, as it teaches to respect the environment and to observe and appreciate the present moment, without haste.
Today we want to explore the meaning of this term, its advantages and the different possibilities it offers.

Dante in Paradise . An illustrated talk in English by Caroline Clarke.

The Glory of Him who moveth everything, penetrates all the Universe, and shines
more brightly in one part, and elsewhere less. Within the Heaven which most receives His Light
I was; and saw what he who thence descends neither knows how, nor hath the power, to tell;
for as it draweth near to its Desire, our intellect so deeply sinks therein,
that recollection cannot follow it. As much, however, of the holy Realm as in my memory
I could treasure up, shall now become the subject of my song.
Canto 1 Paradiso
Some say Dante was more than poet, that he was a mystic - that his Commedia was a Divine Revelation - that he really did glimpse paradise, like other renowned mystics of the Middle Ages.
It’s a fascinating possibility – but not all agree.
Join us as we follow him as he soars with his beloved Beatrice beyond the edge of time to heaven’s highest heights - to the final cosmic vision & blissful union with God that he describes for us on his return.
Presented by Caroline A. M. Clarke

This talk looks at the enormous impact that the art and culture of 14th to 16th century Italy had on the Victorians.

Il commissario Montalbano. An Illustrated talk by David Lamb

The series of detective stories, based on books by Andrea Camilleri was first broadcast by the BBC in 2012. The action is centred on Vigata, a fictional town in southeast Sicily. The scenes are however, filmed mostly around Ragusa, with many shots also of Marina di Ragusa, Scicli and the Castello di Donnafugata. Montalbano's flat is by the lighthouse of Punta Secca. The titles of the episodes are confusing, eg 'The Terracotta Dog', reflecting Camilleri's love of intriguing poetic lines, but giving away nothing about the plot. There are some 30 episodes, some of which are available on DVD sets. This one hour talk by David Lamb, presents the plot of two or three episodes and a brief visual guided tour of the actual locations in Sicily. He has also planned a guided tour holiday, themed on these locations, and other sites of interest, in Sicily, organised by a respected tour company.
Venue: Quorn Village Hall, 64 Leicester Road Quorn, Leicestershire, LE12 8BB
Cost: Free for members, £3 for non members. Tea, coffee and biscuits included.

Paintings and prints of both her Italian and English inspired work will be available for sale on the evening.

World War One Italy on Film. An illustrated talk by Dr Joseph North.

On the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Caporetto, Dr Joseph North’s talk will use newsreels, propaganda and fiction films to explore the life of the Italian people during the First World War. The talk begins by illustrating Italian life in 1911, 50 years after the Unification. After the contentious decision to join the Allies in 1915, Italy endured three years of mountain warfare, near-defeat at Caporetto and triumph one year later. Accounts from Ernest Hemingway, Erwin Rommel and Emilio Lussu will bring the war to life.

Tintoretto: The ‘avant-garde superstar’ Artist of Renaissance Venice

2018-2019 marks the 500 th Anniversary of Tintoretto’s birth. Considered
the most Venetian among the celebrated painters of 16 th Century Venice,
and described, by a 16 th Century biographer, as a ‘peppercorn overwhelming
all other flavours in a dish’. His fast and loose style is so particular that he
was viewed as being radical and the subject of controversy: praised for his
power and inventiveness, yet criticised for his lack of perfection.
Tintoretto’s most influential narrative works of Christian Art were driven by
his Christian faith and reveal a sympathy for reformist trends in the
Church, emphasising the poverty and the humility of Christ and His
followers. Tintoretto’s religious paintings still convey today a deep Christian
message to all, who admire his works.
